Indiana's New Graduated Licensing Law:
RESTRICTIONS TO DRIVERS UNDER AGE 21
Prohibits persons under age 21 from using any type of telecommunications
device while operating a vehicle except for making 911 emergency calls.
10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for first 180 days of driving
After first 180 days: Sun. - Thurs.: 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning;
Sat. and Sun. mornings: 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.
EXEMPTION: Work, school, or church related functions or if accompanied by a
licensed driver 25 years or older.
No passengers for the first 180 days unless accompanied by a licensed instructor
or licensed driver 25 years or older.
EXEMPTIONS: a sibling and/or child of the driver OR a spouse and/or child of
the driver. (Allows for an unlicensed parent, guardian, or stepparent who
is at least 21 years of age and in the front seat.)
15 years with Driver Education
(may not begin classroom or behind-the-wheel training before this time.)
16 years without Driver Ed.
16 years and 90 days with Driver Ed.
16 years and 270 days without Driver Ed.
Must have held Learner Permit for 180 days.
50 hours of supervised practice driving with a licensed instructor
or licensed driver (blood relative) at least 25 years old or a
spouse that is at least 21 years old
(10 hours must be nighttime driving). Applies to ALL new drivers.

Students enrolled in Driver Education must pass the knowledge skills test at the Bureau
of Motor Vehicles in order to obtain a Learner Permit for driving.
